Crowded front teeth: veneers or orthodontics? The question to ask before any tooth is cut

For crowded front teeth, crowns often look like the quickest fix: in a few visits the teeth appear straight. But that speed can come at the cost of grinding away healthy tooth. Because orthodontics and aesthetic dentistry are at the centre of Dr. Hüseyin Aşçı's work, at Dent32 in Beylikdüzü we put the two approaches side by side for crowded teeth.

How the two approaches differ

What it correctsThe position of the tooth in the boneHow the tooth looks (its position stays the same)
Tooth reductionNoneSome or a lot, irreversible

Colour and shapeUnchanged (can be combined with whitening)Colour and shape change too

When should orthodontics come first?

  • When the teeth are healthy, with no or few fillings.
  • When crowding is marked, and making the teeth look straight with crowns would mean cutting some of them heavily.
  • When there is a bite problem: front teeth not meeting properly, a crossbite or an open bite.
  • When gum levels are uneven: orthodontics moves the gum along with the tooth.
  • In younger patients, to delay or avoid the need for crowns later.

We cover options for adults in adult orthodontics and straightening without braces in crooked teeth.

When do crowns or veneers make sense?

  • When misalignment is mild but there are other problems such as colour, shape or large fillings.
  • When the teeth are already crowned or root-treated and weakened.
  • When the patient doesn't want orthodontics and the amount of reduction stays reasonable.

Even then, the aim is the least reduction possible. We compare the options in laminate veneers, zirconia crowns and bonding.

Both together: align first, then refine

In many cases the best result comes from combining the two: a short course of orthodontics aligns the teeth, followed if needed by whitening, bonding or very thin veneers. When the teeth are in the right position, veneers need far less reduction, sometimes none at all. This planning is part of smile design.

Assessment at Dent32

At the examination we assess the position and health of the teeth with photos, an intraoral scan and X-rays if needed. We present the orthodontic and restorative options side by side, with their timing, cost and results, in a written plan. Frequently asked questions

Can veneers fix crowded teeth?

Mild irregularities can be corrected in appearance. With marked crowding, some teeth would need heavy reduction to look straight; in that case orthodontics first is the better choice.

How long do clear aligners take for front teeth?

It depends on the case. Mild crowding may need only a few months, while more complex cases can take over a year; the time becomes clear after the examination and digital planning.

Can teeth with crowns be moved orthodontically?

Yes. Crowned teeth can be moved too; afterwards, the crowns can be replaced to suit the new position if needed.
