Does professional teeth cleaning damage enamel? How often should you have it?
Professional cleaning (scaling) removes hardened bacterial plaque from the teeth with ultrasonic instruments. Done properly, it doesn't damage enamel; most people need it every six months, and people with gum disease more often.

How does tartar form?
Bacterial plaque forms on teeth all the time. Plaque that isn't removed by brushing and flossing combines with minerals in saliva and starts to harden within days, turning into tartar. It builds up most on the inner surfaces of the lower front teeth and the cheek side of the upper molars, where the salivary glands open.
Tartar's rough surface holds more plaque and fuels gum inflammation. Once formed, it can't be brushed off.
Does scaling damage your teeth?
No. Ultrasonic instruments break up tartar with vibration and wash it away with a water spray; used correctly, they don't wear enamel. The feeling that gaps have "opened up" afterwards is actually the spaces that tartar was filling. Teeth don't move apart; as inflammation settles, the gums recover.
How is it done, and does it hurt?
- Examination and X-rays if needed
- Removing tartar with ultrasonic instruments
- Cleaning delicate areas with hand instruments
- Removing stains and polishing
It usually takes 30–45 minutes. Without gum inflammation, most people feel only mild discomfort. For sensitivity, local anaesthetic or desensitising treatments can be used.
How often should you have it?
| Situation | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| Healthy gums, little tartar | Every 6–12 months |
| Fast tartar build-up, smokers | Usually every 6 months |
| After gum disease treatment | Every 3–4 months |
| Implants or many crowns | Every 6 months, with a check-up |
Sensitivity and care afterwards
For a few days afterwards there may be sensitivity to cold and slight gum bleeding; this usually settles by itself, and sensitive toothpaste helps. Cleaning also reduces tea and coffee stains; lightening the teeth's natural colour is a separate procedure, teeth whitening.

Frequently asked questions
Does scaling whiten teeth?
It removes tartar and surface stains from tea, coffee and smoking, so teeth look cleaner and brighter, but it doesn't change the teeth's natural colour.
Can I remove tartar at home?
No. Tartar can't be safely removed with a toothbrush or home tools. What you can do at home is prevent it with regular brushing and flossing.
Is scaling safe during pregnancy?
Yes, and it's recommended to keep gum inflammation under control. The second trimester is usually the most comfortable time.
Is a clean included in a check-up?
It depends on the clinic and your needs. At Dent32 we tell you at the examination whether a clean is needed and what it involves.
