Full-mouth implants: how many implants do you need for a full set of teeth? Options and cost factors
When all the teeth are missing, an implant is not placed for each tooth; a full set of teeth can usually be restored with 4–8 implants per jaw. For removable dentures held by implants, 2–4 implants per jaw may be enough. How many you need depends on bone volume, bite force, the type of prosthesis and your health. This article explains the options and what affects the cost.

Why you don't need 32 implants
A jaw normally has 14–16 teeth, but a fixed implant bridge can carry 10–14 teeth on a few implants. The largest back molars are also often not replaced, without a significant loss of chewing efficiency. So "32 implant teeth" really means treatment with a total of 8–16 implants for both jaws.
Full-mouth implant options
| Option | Implants per jaw | Prosthesis | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Implant-retained denture | 2–4 | Removable, clips onto the implants | Little bone, a tighter budget, or a loose denture |
| All-on-Four | 4 | Fixed bridge | Not enough bone at the back and wanting to avoid a sinus lift |
| All-on-6 / All-on-8 | 6–8 | Fixed bridge (can be sectioned) | Adequate bone and a strong bite |
| Sectioned fixed bridges | 6–8 | Bridge in 2–3 parts | Good bone and wanting near-natural cleaning |

What determines the cost of full-mouth implants
The cost can't be given accurately without an examination and CT scan. The main factors are:
- the number of implants and the implant system used
- additional surgery such as bone grafting or a sinus lift
- the number of teeth to be extracted and treatment of infection
- whether temporary fixed teeth are made
- the material of the final prosthesis: acrylic, composite, zirconia on a titanium bar, or full zirconia
- CT scanning and digital planning

How long does it take?
If there is enough bone, the implants can be placed in one session, and in suitable cases temporary fixed teeth are fitted within a few days. The bone usually needs 3–6 months to integrate with the implants, after which the final prosthesis is made. Bone grafting or a sinus lift lengthens the process. See same-day implants and immediate loading.
Who can have full-mouth implants?
Age alone is not a barrier. Well-controlled diabetes and blood pressure usually don't rule out implants; heavy smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, radiotherapy to the head and neck and certain bone medicines need extra assessment. Frequently asked questions
How many implants are needed for all the teeth?
For fixed teeth, usually 4–8 implants per jaw, 8–16 in total for both jaws. An implant-retained removable denture can use 2–4 implants per jaw.
Why does the cost of full-mouth implants vary from person to person?
The number of implants, the need for extra surgery, the number of extractions, temporary teeth and the material of the final prosthesis all vary, so the cost is only clear after an examination and CT scan.
Can full-mouth implants be done in one day?
If the bone is suitable, the implants can be placed in one session and temporary fixed teeth fitted shortly after. The final prosthesis usually follows after 3–6 months.
