Implant-supported dentures: ways to stop a denture from moving

An implant-supported denture uses two to six implants in a toothless jaw to hold the denture in place; it either clips on and off or is screwed in permanently. The movement, sore spots and chewing difficulty of a conventional denture are greatly reduced.

What are the problems with conventional dentures?

  • The denture moves when speaking and eating, especially in the lower jaw
  • Pressure sores on the gums
  • Much lower chewing force than natural teeth
  • Loosening over time as bone shrinks, needing frequent relines
  • The upper denture covering the palate, affecting taste and comfort

Types of implant-supported denture

TypeTypical number of implantsFeatures
Snap-on (removable) denture2 in the lower jaw, 2–4 in the upperRemoved for cleaning; movement greatly reduced
Bar-retained denture2–4Sits on a bar joining the implants; more stable
Fixed bridge (e.g. All-on-Four)4–6Screwed in and not removed by the patient; closest to natural teeth

For details of fixed options, see our All-on-Four article.

Who is it for?

It suits most people who have no teeth, are unhappy with their current denture and whose general health allows minor surgery. Age alone isn't a barrier. Bone is assessed with a CT scan. For health considerations, see who can get dental implants.

How does treatment proceed?

  1. Examination, CT scan and assessment of your current denture
  2. Placing the implants (your current denture is usually adjusted and worn meanwhile)
  3. Healing: about 2–3 months in the lower jaw, 3–6 months in the upper
  4. Impressions, try-ins and fitting the new denture with its attachments
  5. Check-ups, and renewal of attachment parts when needed

How do I look after it?

Snap-on dentures are removed and brushed daily, and the implant caps are cleaned separately. The plastic inserts in the attachments wear over time and are typically replaced every one to a few years. Fixed bridges are cleaned underneath with interdental brushes and a water flosser, with professional maintenance once or twice a year.

For general implant care, see our implant aftercare guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are two implants enough in the lower jaw?

For a snap-on removable denture, two implants in the lower jaw markedly improve retention for most patients. A fixed bridge usually needs four or more.

Can my existing denture be converted?

If it's in good condition, attachments can sometimes be added to it. More often, a new denture gives a better result.

Can I eat everything with an implant denture?

Chewing efficiency improves markedly compared with conventional dentures. With fixed bridges an almost normal diet is possible, though very hard foods still call for care.

Can an upper denture be made without covering the palate?

With enough implants, upper dentures can be made without a palate, which helps taste and comfort.
