Precision attachment dentures: a partial denture with no visible clasps

Conventional partial dentures grip the remaining teeth with metal clasps, which can show, especially when you smile. With a precision attachment denture, retention comes from small male and female connectors hidden inside crowns on the supporting teeth, so the denture clicks into place without a visible clasp. Precision attachment dentures are among the prosthetic options in Dr. Hüseyin Aşçı's areas of interest.

How does it work?

  1. The teeth next to the gap are prepared for crowns.
  2. One part of the attachment is built into the side of the crowns, where it can't be seen.
  3. The matching part sits inside the denture; when the denture is put in, the two parts lock together.
  4. The patient can take the denture out for cleaning and put it back in.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People missing back teeth who still have their front teeth and don't want visible clasps.
  • People who can't have implants because of general health or bone, or who prefer not to.
  • People whose supporting teeth are sound and already need crowns.

The supporting teeth need good gum and bone support; otherwise the attachment puts too much load on them. Denture options in later life are covered in dental care for older adults.

Care and lifespan

  • Take the denture out and brush it every day, and clean the supporting teeth and the attachment area separately.
  • The plastic or metal retention parts inside the attachment loosen over time; they are replaced at check-ups to restore a firm fit.
  • Crowned supporting teeth should be checked regularly for decay and gum health.

Frequently asked questions

Is a precision attachment denture fixed?

No, it is removable and taken out for cleaning. But it fits more firmly than a clasp denture and the attachment can't be seen.

Do the supporting teeth have to be crowned?

Usually yes; the attachment is built into the crown. That is why the condition of the supporting teeth is the most important part of the plan.

Can attachments be used with implants?

Yes. Similar attachment systems are used in removable dentures on implants, with retention coming from the implants.
