e.max and zirconia in the same mouth: which ceramic for which tooth?

If several teeth need crowns or veneers, they don't all have to be made from the same material. A common approach is to use e.max (lithium disilicate), which lets light through more naturally, on the front teeth where appearance matters most, and stronger zirconia on the back teeth where chewing forces are highest. Done well, the two materials look seamless side by side.

How e.max and zirconia differ

Propertye.max (lithium disilicate)Zirconia
TranslucencyHigh, very close to natural teethMore opaque; newer multilayer zirconia looks more natural
StrengthHigh, enough for front teeth and premolarsVery high, suits back teeth and bridges
For veneersCan be made very thin; often chosen for veneersRarely used for veneers
BondingBonded adhesively to the toothCan also be fixed with conventional cement
BridgesLimited to short front bridgesLong bridges and on implants

We compare the materials in more detail in what is an e.max crown?, zirconia crowns and types of dental crowns.

Why a mixed plan?

  • Appearance at the front: On the incisors and canines most visible in a smile, e.max's translucency gives a natural look.
  • Strength at the back: Chewing forces on the molars are much higher; zirconia is a safe choice there.
  • Bridges and implants: Long bridges and teeth on implants are usually made in zirconia.
  • Preserving tooth: Where sound front teeth remain, e.max veneers may need less reduction (e.max crowns in Beylikdüzü).

How is colour matched?

Getting two different materials to look the same side by side comes down to planning. The shade is chosen with a shade guide and photos under the same lighting, and the laboratory receives the same target shade and surface texture for both materials. The transition zone, usually between the canine and the premolars, needs particular care. Before final cementation there is a try-in in the mouth, and any adjustments to colour or shape are made at that stage.

A mixed plan isn't always needed

  • For a single crown, the material is chosen according to that tooth's position and its neighbours.
  • In some cases newer multilayer zirconia gives enough aesthetics on front teeth too.
  • With night-time grinding, a stronger material or a night guard may be needed even at the front.

Frequently asked questions

Will e.max and zirconia look different side by side?

With good planning and clear communication with the laboratory, the difference isn't visible. A try-in is done before final cementation.

I grind my teeth at night. Can I have e.max on my front teeth?

Yes, but the bite must be adjusted carefully and a night guard is usually recommended. With severe grinding a stronger material may be preferred.

If one tooth needs replacing later, will the colour match?

It can, but matching to existing crowns needs careful photos and shade selection.
