Root canal treatment in Beylikdüzü: symptoms, number of visits and aftercare

Root canal treatment cleans out an inflamed nerve damaged by decay or trauma and seals the canals so the tooth can be kept. It's done under local anaesthetic and most teeth are finished in 1–2 visits.

Which symptoms point to a root canal?

  • Lingering pain after hot or cold
  • Spontaneous, throbbing pain that wakes you at night
  • Pain when biting or touching the tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum (fistula) or facial swelling
  • A tooth that darkens after an injury

Sometimes the nerve dies without symptoms and the problem only shows on an X-ray. The decision is made after examination and X-rays.

How is it done?

  1. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic and isolated from saliva.
  2. Decay is removed and the pulp chamber is reached.
  3. The canals are cleaned and shaped with fine instruments and rinsed with disinfecting solutions.
  4. Canal lengths are checked with X-rays or an electronic device.
  5. The canals are filled with a permanent material and the tooth is sealed.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

With effective anaesthesia you won't feel pain during treatment; only pressure and vibration. The tooth may be tender to bite on for 2–3 days afterwards; that's normal and painkillers help. If pain keeps increasing or swelling develops, contact the clinic.

Do you need a crown afterwards?

ToothGeneral advice
Front teeth, little tooth lossA composite filling is often enough
Premolars and molarsA crown is usually recommended to prevent fracture
Teeth with major lossA post and crown may be needed

Root-filled teeth become more brittle over time. On back teeth, a zirconia crown protects against fracture and helps the tooth last.

What if the root canal fails?

Root canal treatment has a high success rate, but infection can return years later. Re-treatment is tried first; if needed, root-end surgery (apicectomy) is done. If the tooth can't be saved, it's extracted and replaced with an implant or bridge.

When toothache starts at the weekend

Pain that needs a root canal often starts at the worst time: at night or at the weekend. Dent32 is open seven days a week, so we can see a painful tooth the same day and, if needed, carry out first aid (opening the tooth to relieve pressure). Frequently asked questions

How long does a root canal take?

Usually 30–60 minutes for front teeth and 60–90 minutes for multi-canal molars, depending on the number of canals and inflammation.

Can antibiotics replace a root canal?

No. Antibiotics can help control spreading infection and swelling, but they don't clean out the inflamed tissue inside the tooth. Pain may ease temporarily but the problem remains.

Will a root-filled tooth last for life?

A properly treated and well-restored tooth can last many years, often for life.

Root canal or extraction?

Keeping the natural tooth is preferred where possible. If the tooth is badly broken or the root is cracked, extraction and an implant may be more predictable; the decision is made at the examination.
