Dental fillings in Beylikdüzü: how long does a white filling take, and when can you eat?
A filling replaces the cavity left after decay is removed with a tooth-coloured material. A single white (composite) filling usually takes 20–45 minutes and sets instantly under a curing light, so you only need to wait for the numbness to wear off before eating. Caught early, decay can be treated with a filling before it needs a root canal or crown.

When do you need a filling?
Decay starts in the enamel (the outer layer) and, if untreated, moves into the dentine and then the nerve. Decay in the enamel and dentine is treated with a filling; once it reaches the nerve, root canal treatment is needed. We explain the stages in signs of tooth decay.
- A brief twinge with sweet or cold things
- Brown or black spots or a visible hole in the tooth
- Food getting stuck between teeth
- A chipped tooth edge or an old filling with an open margin
- Decay between teeth seen on a check-up X-ray before it causes symptoms
How is a white filling done?
- If needed, the area is numbed with local anaesthetic.
- The decay is removed while sound tooth is preserved.
- The tooth surface is prepared with a special gel and bonding agent.
- The composite is matched to your tooth colour and built up in layers, each hardened with a blue curing light.
- The filling is shaped, the bite is checked and it's polished.
| Filling type | Typical time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Small front or back filling | 20–30 minutes | Usually one visit |
| Large filling covering several surfaces | 30–60 minutes | An inlay or onlay may be considered depending on biting load |
| Several teeth in one session | Depends on the number of teeth | Teeth on the same side can be done under one anaesthetic |
When can I eat after a filling?
A composite filling sets instantly under the light, so there's no need to wait for the filling itself. If you had anaesthetic, though, don't eat until the numbness wears off (usually 1–3 hours); you could bite your cheek or lip without noticing. The same applies to hot drinks.
Mild sensitivity to cold for the first few days is normal. If the filling feels "high" when you bite, or sensitivity lasts more than a week, pop in for a quick adjustment. If a filling falls out, see what to do if a filling falls out.
How long does a filling last?
Composite fillings usually last many years, depending on care, size and habits. The main things that shorten their life are clenching, biting hard objects, frequent sugary snacks and new decay at the edge of the filling. For very large losses, a porcelain or composite inlay or onlay made in a laboratory is a more durable option.
If your amalgam (silver) fillings are sound, you don't have to replace them just for colour; if they're cracked or decayed, they can be replaced with white fillings. Details: what is a white filling.
