Do whitening toothpastes and charcoal toothpaste work? Enamel damage and real whitening

Whitening toothpastes can reduce the surface stains left by tea, coffee and smoking, thanks to abrasive particles and some chemicals, but they don't change the tooth's own (internal) colour. Charcoal toothpastes have not been shown to whiten teeth, and very abrasive ones can damage enamel. To genuinely lighten tooth colour, you need whitening supervised by a dentist.

How do whitening toothpastes work?

TypeEffectCaution
Abrasive (silica etc.)Mechanically reduces surface stainsHighly abrasive pastes can wear enamel over time
Low-concentration peroxideSlight lightening; limited because contact time is shortCan cause sensitivity
Blue pigmentLeaves a thin film for an instant optical whiteningThe effect is temporary
CharcoalClaimed to reduce surface stains; evidence is lackingCan be abrasive; most contain no fluoride

The risks of charcoal toothpaste

  • Abrasive particles can wear enamel and especially exposed root surfaces, which can make teeth look more yellow and cause sensitivity.
  • Most charcoal toothpastes contain no fluoride, so protection against decay is weaker.
  • Charcoal particles can lodge at filling edges and the gum line and look grey.
  • There are no reliable studies showing a whitening effect.

Why toothpaste alone can't change tooth colour

A tooth's colour comes largely from the dentine beneath the enamel. With age, enamel thins and dentine darkens; some medicines and a dead nerve can also discolour a tooth from inside. Toothpaste can't change this internal colour. For the causes of discolouration: why teeth turn yellow.

Dentist-supervised whitening

The gels used in in-clinic or at-home whitening penetrate the tooth and lighten its colour. Before treatment there is an examination, decay and receding gums are assessed, the gums are protected and sensitivity is managed. Fillings, crowns and veneers don't whiten, so the plan takes any restorations on front teeth into account. More: teeth whitening: in-clinic or at home, teeth whitening in Beylikdüzü.

Choosing a toothpaste for everyday use

  • Choose a fluoride toothpaste (usually 1000–1450 ppm for adults).
  • If you have sensitivity, use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
  • Consider using whitening toothpaste occasionally rather than all the time.
  • Avoid hard brushes and brushing too hard.
