Pain and sensitivity after a filling: how long it lasts and when it isn't normal
Mild sensitivity, especially to cold, is common after a filling and usually settles by itself within a few days to two weeks. Pain when biting is usually caused by the filling being slightly high and is fixed with a quick adjustment. With deep decay, though, nerve inflammation can develop after a filling; pain that starts on its own, lingers or wakes you at night is the sign.

What is normal after a filling?
| Sign | Possible cause | What is done? |
|---|---|---|
| A twinge with cold that fades in seconds | Post-treatment sensitivity of the tooth | Usually eases in 1–2 weeks; a sensitivity toothpaste can help |
| Sharp pain on biting, tooth feels 'high' | The filling is slightly above the bite | A bite adjustment at a short appointment |
| An ache in the neighbouring tooth | Contact point or referred sensitivity | Monitored for a few days |
| Pain that starts on its own, lingers or wakes you at night | Nerve inflammation (pulpitis) | Examination; root canal treatment may be needed |
Why pain can continue with deep decay
The closer the decay is to the nerve, the more likely the nerve is already inflamed. In this case the dentist places a protective liner near the nerve and monitors the tooth. Some teeth settle after the filling; in others the inflammation doesn't resolve and root canal treatment is needed. That's why your dentist may follow you up for a while after a deep filling. When can I eat after a filling?
A white (composite) filling is hardened with a light, so it is set by the end of the procedure; you can eat once the numbness wears off. Avoiding very hot, very cold and very hard foods in the first days reduces sensitivity. More: dental fillings in Beylikdüzü, what is a white filling.
To reduce sensitivity
- Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth; its effect builds over a few weeks.
- Avoid hard-bristled brushes and brushing too hard.
- Cut down on acidic drinks (fizzy drinks, lemon water).
- Come for a check if sensitivity hasn't eased in two weeks or is getting worse.
For general causes of sensitivity, see sensitivity to hot and cold.
When to come in without waiting
- Pain starts on its own and lasts for minutes
- It wakes you from sleep
- There is swelling of the gum or a fever
- The filling has broken or fallen out. See my filling fell out

Frequently asked questions
How long does sensitivity last after a filling?
Usually it eases within a few days to two weeks. Sensitivity lasting longer than two weeks or getting worse needs checking.
Why does my filled tooth hurt when I bite?
The most common reason is that the filling is slightly high. It's adjusted at a short appointment and the pain usually eases straight away.
Will I need a root canal after a filling?
Usually not. If the decay was very close to the nerve and the inflammation doesn't resolve, root canal treatment may be needed.
