What are laminate veneers, are teeth reduced, and how long do they last?

A laminate veneer is a thin layer of porcelain, usually 0.3–0.7 mm thick, bonded only to the front surface of a tooth.

Are teeth reduced for veneers?

In most cases a very thin layer of enamel is removed from the front of the tooth, usually less than half a millimetre. The aim is for the porcelain to create a natural profile without bulging.

In some cases — for example when teeth are small or set back — veneers can be placed without any reduction (no-prep). But this does not suit every tooth and can lead to a bulky look and gum problems.

Who are veneers suitable for?

  • Discolouration that does not respond to whitening
  • Small chips and wear on front teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Mismatched shape and length

With severe crowding, heavy clenching or when most of the tooth is missing, veneers may not be a good option. In those cases orthodontics or crowns are considered.

In short, veneers are for teeth that are structurally sound and whose appearance you mainly want to change. If a tooth is weakened, a crown protects it better.

How long do veneers last?

Studies report that most porcelain veneers placed for the right indication with good bonding technique remain in place for ten years or more.

The main factors that shorten their life are night-time clenching, nail biting or biting hard objects, poor oral hygiene and gum recession. If you clench, a night guard is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Will my teeth be sensitive after veneers?

There may be short-term sensitivity. Because reduction stays within the enamel, lasting sensitivity is rare.

Do veneers change colour?

Porcelain does not stain or change colour. Natural teeth can darken over time, so if whitening is needed it is done before the veneers.

Can a veneer come off?

It is rare when bonded correctly. Biting hard objects and clenching increase the risk.

Can veneers be removed so I go back to my old teeth?

If teeth were reduced, the surface does not return to its original state; the tooth should always be protected by a restoration. This is worth knowing before you decide.
