How long do zirconia crowns take? Number of visits, try-ins and temporary teeth
For most patients, zirconia crowns are completed in 3–4 appointments over about 1–2 weeks. At the first session the teeth are prepared and an impression is taken; the crown made in the lab is then tried in once or twice, and cemented at the final visit. A root canal, gum treatment or a large number of teeth can lengthen the process. This article explains what happens at each stage.

There are usually a few days between lab stages. When the examination and preparation can be done on the same day, the total comes down to three appointments.
Why the try-in matters and how long it takes
At the try-in we check that the crown sits exactly at the gum line, its contacts with neighbouring teeth, the bite and the shade. Front teeth may need a second try-in for shade and shape; for back teeth one is usually enough. Each try-in typically takes 30–60 minutes. If you don't like something you see at the try-in, that's the time to say so; changes are difficult once the crown is cemented.
Days with temporary teeth
- Temporary teeth are fixed with a weak cement; avoid hard and sticky foods (chewing gum, Turkish delight, nuts).
- If a temporary comes off, keep it and call the clinic; it can usually be refitted the same day.
- Prepared teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold; this usually eases once the final crown is fitted.
- When flossing around temporaries, slide the floss out sideways rather than pulling it up.

What can make it take longer
- A tooth that needs a root canal: the root canal is completed first.
- Gum inflammation: an accurate impression can't be taken on bleeding gums; gum treatment comes first.
