Private health insurance, complementary insurance and SGK for dental treatment: a payment guide for Beylikdüzü

Dental treatment covered by SGK (Turkey's Social Security Institution) is mostly provided at state oral and dental health hospitals and centres; at private clinics, patients usually pay themselves. Private health insurance generally covers dental treatment only if a separate "dental cover" has been added, and only up to the policy limit. Checking your policy before treatment and getting pre-approval from your insurer with a written treatment plan avoids surprises.

Does SGK cover dental treatment?

Basic dental treatments covered by general health insurance, such as examinations, fillings, extractions and root canal treatment, are mainly provided at Ministry of Health oral and dental hospitals and centres, and at university dental faculties. Conditions such as age and time limits may apply to dentures. Implants and cosmetic treatments are generally not covered.

At private dental clinics, patients usually pay for treatment themselves. Coverage and conditions change from time to time, so we recommend confirming the current rules with SGK or its ALO 170 helpline.

Does private health insurance cover dental treatment?

In many private health insurance policies, dental treatment isn't part of the main cover; it's added separately as "dental cover" or an "oral and dental health package". Check these points in your policy:

ItemWhat to check
Scope of coverAre examinations, fillings, root canals, extractions, cleaning, dentures and implants listed individually?
Annual limitThe total amount set aside for dental care and any per-procedure cap
Co-paymentThe percentage of the invoice you pay yourself
Waiting periodHow many months after the policy starts you must wait for each procedure
Contracted providersDirect billing at contracted clinics, or reimbursement against an invoice at non-contracted ones?
Pre-approval (provizyon)Which procedures need approval before treatment

Cosmetic procedures (whitening, veneers, smile design) are excluded from the vast majority of policies.

What does complementary health insurance do?

Complementary health insurance (tamamlayıcı sağlık sigortası, TSS) is designed to cover the extra fees charged at private hospitals contracted with SGK. Dental treatment isn't part of the main cover in most TSS policies, although some policies can add it as an extra package. Check the "additional cover" section of your policy or ask your insurer.
