Sterilisation and hygiene at a dental clinic: what to look for and what to ask

Dental instruments come into contact with blood and saliva, so infection control is one of a dental clinic's most basic responsibilities. Hygiene standards aren't always visible from the outside, but there are signs patients can watch for and questions they can ask. In this post we follow an instrument through sterilisation and explain what to look out for at a clinic.

An instrument's journey through sterilisation

  1. Used instruments are taken to a separate area away from the treatment room.
  2. They are cleaned first to remove blood and tissue, usually in an ultrasonic cleaner.
  3. They are dried and packed into sterilisation pouches.
  4. They are sterilised in an autoclave, using pressurised steam.
  5. The pouch is marked with the sterilisation date and stored sealed.
  6. The pouch is opened in front of the patient.

Single-use items

  • Gloves are changed for every patient, and during treatment if contaminated.
  • Anaesthetic needles, saliva ejectors and some burs and tips are single use.
  • Patient bibs, cups and surface covers are replaced for every patient.

Surfaces, the dental chair and waterlines

Between patients, contact surfaces such as the chair, light handle and tray are disinfected or covered with single-use barrier film. The dental unit's waterlines need regular disinfection to prevent biofilm, and suction systems are cleaned daily.

What you can look for and ask about

  • Are the instruments in sealed pouches, and is the pouch opened in front of you?
  • Do the dentist and assistant wear gloves and masks, and put on fresh gloves?
  • Are the treatment room and waiting area clean and tidy?
  • When you ask how sterilisation is done, do you get a clear answer?

What is an autoclave?

A device that sterilises instruments with pressurised steam at high temperature; dental clinics use it for metal instruments.

Should I mention a chronic illness or infection?
